Abstract: Electric vehicles (EV) have different differential systems namely, mechanical differential (MCD) and electronic differential (ED). Each system has its own pros and cons that ultimately decides the user’s preference. Therefore, this final year project (FYP) aims to develop a magnetic differential (MD) motor that draws the benefit of both systems and forgo the disadvantages. The MD motor is a double-sided rotor incorporated with magnetic steering (MS) field winding to inversely regulate the magnetic field, the produced MS-field excitation from the windings differentiates the torque of two rotors thereby achieving MD action during cornering of vehicle through the process of electromagnetic induction. The analysis of differential function in the motor is performed by using a prominent simulation finite element method (FEM) software JMAG-Designer. Simulated results were shown to affirm the principles on what the MD motor is based on as well as visualised flux density occurring during differential action.
