Abstract: The optical fibre drawing process is the industrial standard procedure used to manufacture optical fibre that is widely used for fibre-optic communication, which allow for digital data transfer over greater distances at higher data rates compared with electronic communication. The main objective of this project is to design a scaled-down model of the optical fibre draw tower which will demonstrate the proof of concepts of the optical fibre draw tower, which will serve adequately for teaching purposes. In Part 1 of the Table Top Fibre Draw Tower project, we will be designing the heating element, studying various plastic preforms that are suitable to simulate the optical fibre preform based on the chosen heating element, and designing the frame that will hold the various components together as one entity that is the Table Top Fibre Draw Tower. Part 2 of the project will discuss the designing of the PID motor control setup that will drive the feeding and drawing mechanisms of the Table Top Fibre Draw Tower.
