However manual realignment is tedious, imprecise and requires large amounts of time due to the submicron scale of both optical fiber and waveguide. Automatic alignment is then introduced as a solution to this, coupled with an algorithm which ensures the new coupling efficiency is similar to the old coupling efficiency.
