dc.description.abstractAn investigation on the ultimate compressive load capacity of 2 configurations of screw-fastened Built-Up Stainless Steel stub column sections is presented in this report. Austenitic stainless steel grade EN 1.4301 plates were first press-braked into C-channels and cut to their desired lengths, before being connected by self-drilling screws to form the 2 cross-sections. Initial geometric and imperfection measurements were done to establish the dimensions and geometric irregularities of the specimens. The material properties of the specimens were then established through tensile coupon tests. A total of 20 specimens were then subjected to stub column tests to study their compressive resistances and local buckling behaviour. The compressive strengths of the specimens from the stub column tests were used to evaluate the accuracy and capability of 2 existing design codes – Eurocode 3 and American Society of Civil Engineers Specifications, in predicting the compressive capacities of the stub column specimens. It was found that both codes were able to closely predict the compressive strengths of the specimens, with similar degrees of accuracy. With certain overlap thickness factors used, the predicted compressive strengths of the 2 codes were also conservative in predicting the compressive capacities of these stub column specimens.en_US
