Abstract: Due to the emerging environmental issues, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become one of many alternatives that account for a large proportion of the current battery market and have wide applications in our daily lives. Among many variations of lithium-ion batteries, NMC-811 batteries (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) are favourable due to their high performance yet low-cost materials. However, some issues emerge from this type of battery: microcracks, phase transformation, and side reactions between electrolytes and their surrounding environment. These issues decrease the overall battery performance. Coating has become one of the most efficient solutions to tackle these issues. By covering the host particles (cathodes), it is efficient to prevent direct contact between the environment (liquid electrolyte, air, and moisture) and the active materials inside the cathode. Currently, there is an increasing number of studies on the dry coating method because of its environmental benign and low-energy process. In this study, two different methods of dry coating process are conducted: vertical stirring method and 3D mixing method. These two different methods significantly affect the morphological structure and the porosity of the particles, which affect the overall battery performance. Samples were also prepared to investigate the effect of different coating concentrations on the battery electrochemical performance, especially cyclability and retention rate.
