Abstract: High penetration of renewable resources and power electronic devices have brought stability issues into the modern power grid. Hence, proper control strategies need to be designed and analyzed. The objective of this dissertation project is to analyze the distributed secondary control strategy in islanded AC microgrids. First, the hierarchical control framework including primary control and distributed secondary control in islanded AC microgrids is introduced. Second, considering all the system dynamics, an accurate small-signal model of the microgrid system is developed. Third, stability analysis is performed to investigate the effect of controller parameters on system stability. Then, the accuracy of the developed model is verified through time-domain simulation in MATLAB/Simulink under various scenarios. Additionally, a consensus control algorithm for the state-of-charge balance of distributed energy storage systems in the microgrids is analyzed. Finally, the simulation test is conducted to validate the performance of the proposed method.
