Abstract: This project aims to investigate the ways in which we can leverage on modern technology to push the boundaries of typography in local graphic design practice. Straits Sans is a type design project and type design is the art of designing a set of letterforms in a particular style. Technology has greatly expanded the possibilities of type design in graphic design. However, technology is rarely being explored or experimented on in local type design. This project is localised by drawing inspiration from fonts used in a local print publication published in the 1900s called the ‘Straits Times Annual’ by the Straits Times Printing Press. Advanced technology involved in font production today was applied to create dynamic typefaces suitable for contemporary use.
