Focusing on the theme and representation of “home”, this thesis explores how the documentaries "Out/Marriage" and "The Immortal’s Play" adeptly potray the multiple identities of Southeast Asian female immigrants across borders, and analyzes how documentary-making intervenes in Taiwan's mainstream socio-cultural discourse. As far as space is concerned, the two documentaries point to different stages and identity shaping processes, such as moving inside/outside the family, and crossing from the private space of the family into the public space. Firstly, through film analysis, this thesis analyzes the imagination of “home” in the two documentaries, and examines the different resistance and negotiation strategies of new Southeast Asian female immigrants in Taiwan. Secondly, through thematic analysis, this thesis reflects upon how documentaries can be used as a tool to intervene in and challenge mainstream socio-cultural discourses.
