Abstract: ABSTRACT Energy-saving and environment protection have become the key theme for manufacturers in today’s compressor industry. Positive-displacement compressors with higher mechanical efficiency (i.e. less frictional losses and thus more energy efficient) are preferable for both refrigeration and air conditioning applications. This report presents both the design work for mechanical efficiency improvement, and the development of an E-learning tool for positive displacement compressor with user friendly user interface (UI). After having a review of current compressor family, based on the configuration of an existing rotary compressor (rolling piston), a high efficiency compressor was designed through conceptual formulation, embodiment design and finally coming to a detailed design model: Revolving Vane (RV) compressor. The mathematical model and friction analysis of the RV compressor are presented. A UI, named Revolving Vane Introducer (RVI), was created through conceptual, logical and detailed design. The design work followed conventional design principles and guidance like Shneideman’s Eight Golden Rules and Bull’s Eye framework. A professional user interface design tool, Microsoft Expression Blend, was utilized to construct this Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) application. Compared with existing compressors, the initial design of RV compressor with a rotating cylinder has fewer components, mechanical efficiency up to 94.1% and almost 20% reduction in total fictional losses. Meanwhile, the RVI is expected to facilitate users’ understanding of this new compressor. And the testing on its usability is left to further investigation.
