Abstract: Based on an analysis of a sample of job announcements selected from the American Libraries, this study has surveyed the trends in requirements for cataloguing positions. It has attempted to find out the type of cataloguing positions advertised by various employers; the skills and knowledge listed as basic requirements; the relevance of traditional cataloguing skills in the electronic environment; the requirements of information technology skills for cataloguing positions; and the requirements for other skills including management and communication skills. This study has particularly focused on the changes that are taking place in terms of requirements for cataloguing jobs with the implementation of web-based systems.
