Abstract: This paper provides an analysis of nominal classification systems, focussing on the grammaticalization of classifiers in different languages. Classification seems to be inherent to humans, with a need to compulsively classify the world around them according to specific characteristics. The study of classifiers as a linguistic phenomenon can give a deeper understanding of different cultures and how the speakers of languages view their environment. The paper attempts to contribute fresh perspectives and interesting insights into the development of classifiers, using the process of grammaticalization as a tool to examine how classifiers are formed. Comparisons were made between the origins and functions of classifiers in a sample of languages, picking out selected themes for discussion. The findings show that the culture of the speakers heavily influences the development of classifiers in a language.
