Abstract: Discussions on the philosophy of friendship have centred mainly on two topics: the nature of genuine friendships and the benefits such friendships bring to parties involved. While this means that the requirements for what constitute genuine friendships and the kind of people eligible for them have been laid out, comparatively little has been said on the necessary process that individuals must undergo before they can be eligible for genuine friendships. In this thesis, I explore this reflective deliberative process and attempt to expand its conclusions to form a desire-based framework for genuine friendship – one free from the normative forces that surround earlier popular conceptions of friendship.
