J. Y. (2023). Fabrication and investigation of multi-layered preferentially aligned structures. Final Year Project (FYP), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. https://hdl.handle.net/10356/165826 | Project: | B098 | Abstract: | This study involves the investigation of the drying time of an individual colloidal system and the fabrication of multi-layered preferentially aligned structure with magnetised alumina platelets of 10030 and 02025. Alumina platelets of 10030 would refer to the size of dimensional size of the micro-platelets of 10 microns in diameter and 0.030 microns thickness and the Alumina platelets of 02025 would refer to the dimensional size of the micro-platelets of 2 microns and 0.025 microns thickness. The structure is created using the method of Magnetically Assisted Slip Casting (MASC) where a permanent magnet is rotated to create a magnetic field to influence and align the magnetised alumina platelets to the desired orientations followed by sintering to form a dense microstructure. Templated Grain Growth (TGG) would occur during the sintering phase and further densify the microstructure. The processes of MASC and TGG creates dense aligned grains that promotes desirable mechanical properties like high Hardness, Flexural Strength, Flexural Strain and Toughness. Further experiments are conducted on the investigation of local mechanical properties of multi-layered structures like the Flexural Strength and Hardness and to be compared to the Mechanical Properties of microstructures of single compositions. With these investigations, it may provide future breakthroughs in creating composite microstructure of controlled mechanical properties for structural applications. | URI: | https://hdl.handle.net/10356/165826 | Schools: | School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
