Recently, preparations of chiral silica materials have attracted significant attentions due to their potential application on chiral discrimination and drug delivery. In this study, the design, characterization and synthesis of novel enantioselective, large pore-diameter silica has been successfully reported. Specifically, chiral SBA-15 and SBA-16 were synthesized using achiral surfactant as template and a chiral dopant, Λ-[Co(+)(chxn)3]I3 to induce chirality in the silica source. The formation mechanism for the chiral silica is by means of surfactant-templated self assembly followed by the induction of chirality by the as-synthesized chiral cobalt complex. It is reported that both the extracted chiral silica appeared to be capable of chiral discrimination in virtue of the enantioselective controlled release of a chiral drug, metoprolol which is non-associated with the chiral co-template. In comparison, chiral mesoporous SBA-15 exhibits better stereoselectivity than chiral SBA-16 for the resolution of chiral metoprolol drug. In a nutshell, chiral SBA-15 with enantioselective characteristics could be a potential candidate for further applications in drug delivery, drug separation, chiral catalysis and chiral sensing.en_US
