Abstract: This project aims to create an aesthetically pleasing 3-dimensional patterned and edible material that can unfold itself when placed on top of a beverage due to shape memory effect. Since materials placed on top of beverages must be edible on top of having shape memory effects, Tapioca Starch and Rice Paper are the 2 key materials discussed in this report. For the patterning and design of these materials, laser machining will be the method used and discussed in this report. Experiments are then conducted to create a suitable membrane for its shape memory properties as well laser machining purposes.
