Abstract: Singapore boasts a diverse population comprising people of different religious and cultural backgrounds. Consequently, various forms of paranormal beliefs have taken root among its people. Some of these beliefs are subject to much scrutiny in the West but are fundamental to the major religions practised in Singapore. As the desire for more individualised belief systems grows, more people are adopting paranormal beliefs that extend beyond the boundaries of their respective religions. Moreover, there is a growing trend of people turning away from mainstream religion, but still holding paranormal beliefs. This study explores the reasons why some Singaporeans believe in paranormal aspects beyond what is found in their respective religions, as well as how paranormal beliefs continue to function in the lives of those who have left mainstream religion. It provides insights into the broader social and cultural factors that underpin the adoption of paranormal beliefs.
