Abstract: The web-based instant messenger is a very important supportive tool in the collaborative working environment. However the existing chatting tools in the system cannot satisfy users’ needs. Therefore the improvement of the performance and user experience of the chatting tools becomes a must. With this motivation, this project analyzed several existing chatting tools and instant messengers. Then firstly a primitive instant messenger was designed and partially developed. Then this project tried to customize and embed AJAX IM, a mature open source instant messenger into the repository system with some improvement based on some architectures and implementations built from the first design to achieve a better performance. Although AJAX IM was successfully embedded into the system, there are still spaces for improvement and risks which need to be eliminates. Moreover, the development of the first instant messenger is not a waste. It may achieve a better performance when the design is fully implemented out.
