Abstract: While research on the experiences of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is abundant, there exists a significant gap in understanding the experiences of siblings, particularly the adults, and notably in the context of Singapore. To address this gap, this study seeks to qualitatively assess and understand the experiences of typically developing adult siblings of individuals with ASD (TDAS-ASDs) in Singapore. Six participants, aged 21 to 34, participated in semi-structured interviews designed to understand their unique experiences as a TDAS-ASD. Data was analysed using the phenomenological approach. The findings shed light on the experiences that TDAS-ASDs encounter in their early adulthood. When TDAS-ASDs transition into middle and late adulthood, their parents' inability to continue providing care for their sibling with ASD led to anticipated concerns. These concerns vary, with some echoing those experienced in early adulthood while others present new challenges unique to this stage. These findings highlight the evolving nature of challenges faced by TDAS-ASDs and emphasise the necessity of transition planning in early adulthood. Furthermore, findings revealed that participants' experiences varied based on various factors. Therefore, it is crucial to provide customised support tailored to the unique circumstances and current stage of adulthood of a TDAS-ASD. Further research is warranted to establish the generalisability of these findings.
