Abstract: How to Disappear is a photographic exploration that documents the disappearing queer community in Singapore. Since the repeal of Section 377A of the Penal Code, the community had hopes that this could be a step forward for our country. However, the confusing tension between the country and the community continues to grow as the leaders endorse amendments to protect the definition of marriage post-repeal. This work dives into a narrative that portrays the thorough erasure of the queer community in Singapore. Looking at our queer history, and how the country had dealt with the community, it seems like the past is repeating itself once again today. By merging modern image making and traditional photographic processes, How to Disappear takes on the impossible task of capturing a disappearance. This work serves as evidence to the community's existence, fighting for a more inclusive society that embraces diversity, even if we remain unseen.
