Abstract: “Purgatory” aims to display the classic humour setting of mid-century cartoons, like Tom and Jerry (William and Joseph, 1940-1967), the Looney Tunes series (Avery, 1937- 1953) and Mickey Mouse cartoons (Disney and Iwerks, 1928-1947). The film depicts a stubborn angel, Muriel, refusing to accept support from a helpful dog after a workplace mishap. This leads to an adventure into purgatory where Muriel with the help of Dog work together to fix the problem in time before their boss, God, misses their next appointment. This report will look specifically into the Background design and execution and production management of our animated film, Purgatory. It will also examine the different methods used to achieve the final results for the animation, as well as discuss how certain challenges were resolved or mitigated. Most importantly the essay will delve into how the settings are crafted to push and enhance the animation’s comical narrative.
