Abstract: The 4th International Conference of the North East Indian Linguistic Society (NEILS) was held at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which is located in a suburb of Shillong, home of Khasi people as well as the capital of Meghalaya, India, from January 13-17, 2009. The idea to bring NEILS outside Guwahati, where the first three NEILS meetings took place, was made possible by the devoted effort of Shailendra Kumar Singh, head of the Department of Linguistics at NEHU, and the three founders of NEILS: Jyotiprakash Tamuli (Gauhati University), Stephen Morey (La Trobe University) and Mark W. Post (La Trobe University), as well as by a generous grant from the Australian Research Council South Asia Node.
