Abstract: This capstone project delves into the intricate landscape of translation strategies as applied to contemporary Chinese prose, with a specific focus on the nuanced interplay between domestication, foreignization, and "Reader Response" Theory. Through a meticulous analysis of practical translation examples, this study elucidates the multifaceted decisions and challenges encountered by translators when bridging linguistic and cultural divides. By immersing in practical translation examples, this project unravels the profound influence of translation strategies on reader engagement and interpretation, thereby shedding light on the profound impact of translation on cross-cultural communication. The project underscores the imperative of eliciting diverse and meaningful responses from readers, advocating for authenticity and resonance in translation endeavors. However, the study acknowledges its limitations, primarily stemming from its selective focus on passages from contemporary Chinese prose. Future research endeavors may seek to broaden the scope, encompassing a more extensive array of texts spanning diverse genres and historical epochs. Moreover, the integration of additional theoretical frameworks and empirical statistics could provide richer insights into the complexities of literary translation. This capstone project offers valuable insights into the art and science of literary translation, illuminating its pivotal role in facilitating cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.
