The impromptu nature and uninterrupted duration of the speech presented substantial challenges to the interpreters, both in terms of diplomatic precision and psychological endurance. The paper aims to demonstrate that eco-translatology can elucidate diplomatic interpreting, where a successful case aligns the dynamics of the setting, the interpreter, and the interpretive product with those of the interpretive eco-environment, the interpretive community, and the text - three key aspects of eco-translatology. Through analysis, the author seeks to illustrate how the diplomatic interpreting setting at the outset of the Alaska conversation resembled an ecological system and how the interplay between these elements influenced the interpreting process. To achieve this, examples from the interpreting text are examined to illustrate the similarity between the diplomatic interpreting setting and an ecological system and how the three elements mentioned interact. The analysis shows that interpreters must adapt to the interpreting ecology to ensure viability over the long run. This includes considering linguistic, communicative, and politico-cultural factors as well as maintaining harmony between the text and its environment and enabling the seamless transfer of the source text to the target text ecology. More importantly, it also integrates the power dynamics into the interpretation to highlight China’s attitudes and initiatives. The study highlights the importance of careful mediation among the interpreting ecology, the interpreting community, and the text for successful diplomatic interpreting. It suggests that students and practitioners reflect on their placement within the interpreting eco-environment and the text and focus on adaptation and selection in interpreting activities to thrive in this dynamic environment, especially considering power relationships in the diplomatic environment.
