Issue Date: 2009
Abstract: Optical Communications is known to be the backbone of modern telecommunications. This is due to its high capacity nature, low attenuation in long distance transmissions, and having greater ability to resist electromagnetic noise along with a much lower maintaince fee compared to other transmission mediums. Currently, most optical communication systems work on a circuit-switching basis due to the technological bottleneck. Further research has been done by many to transform it into a packet switching one, which will therefore enhance efficiency. Technologies like OBS (Optical Burst Switching) and OPS (Optical Packet Switiching) have been hot research topics in this field. This report will focus on the student’s research on Optical Packet Switching. Details on maximizing the overall efficiencies through different software approach will be discussed
