Web application subtitle editor

Abstract

Meadow9 Web is an online web application developed by the Speech and Language Laboratory at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to enable users to transcribe conversations from speech to text, play, pause and rewind audio playback and view and download transcripts. However, there is no option for users to modify these transcripts. Furthermore, there is also no visual representation of the audio. This project improves the existing Meadow9 Web by developing a new web page that houses a transcript editor and an interactive audio waveform player to support the online editing of transcripts. The transcript editor displays the transcript in paragraphs with timestamps. The paragraph is highlighted whenever the audio reaches the corresponding text. Users can edit the transcript and modify speakers’ names while listening to the audio. The interactive audio waveform player enables users to visualise and loop through a particular audio segment during transcript editing. Media controls such as play/pause, volume, playback speed, fast forward/rewind, waveform zooming and region looping facilitate precise audio playback. Users can undo or redo any changes using the undo/redo buttons. They can also select from a range of export formats to download the edited transcript. The user interface of these features is designed to be intuitive and have a minimalist aesthetic so that users can navigate the web editor easily.
