Abstract: A promising solution for adherence towards physical rehabilitation in recent research has been the usage of exercise-based serious games, or exergames, as a tool for self-driven exercise to benefit older adults’ physical and mental capabilities. However, older adults may feel a sense of frustration from exergames due to difficulty-related anxiety or boredom. In this work, we suggest that dynamic difficulty adjustment can be implemented to improve older adults’ player experience. To achieve this goal, we design a large language model-based dynamic difficulty adjustment algorithm. A pilot study involving 12 participants from all age groups show a high self-reported engagement score, which indicates that this approach toward dynamic difficulty adjustment can improve the older adults’ player experience.
