Abstract: In today’s advanced society, people worldwide are living longer. Most can expect to live beyond their sixties, and more countries tend to have a higher proportion of elderly people in their society. By 2030, 1 in 6 will be aged 60[1] and above(WHO), and about 1 in 4 people in Singapore will be aged 65 and above(Population statistic)[2]. However, in an aged society, more issues tend to arise. Elderly people tend to suffer from common conditions such as hearing loss and chronic conditions like dementia and depression. This is exacerbated by the fact that elderly people are lonely, and it has been found that being lonely increases an older person’s risk of dying by 7% when controlling other pre-existing conditions [3]. As such, this project aims to design an artificial Intelligence agent that can chat with the elderly. In doing so, the agent acts as a companion for the elderly, and in turn, the agent can also learn more about the elderly through the conversations.
