Abstract: Majorana Fermions, exotic quasiparticles predicted to exist at the interface of topological superconductors (p-wave superconductors), have attracted significant interest due to their potential applications in fault-tolerant quantum computation. This final year project seeks to develop a deeper understanding of the theoretical foundations of Topological superconductors and Majorana Fermions. The investigation begins with the study of topological insulators, characterized by topological invariants that define their unique phases of matter. This is followed by an exploration of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity, which provides the framework for understanding conventional superconductors. Finally, the project delves into the transition from conventional to topological superconductors, examining the emergence of Majorana Fermions.
