Abstract: The rapid shift from traditional project management to virtual mode was accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and globalization. The virtual project management has since reshaped the way global collaborate. Even though the World Health Organization has already lifted its international health emergency declaration in 2023, organizations still continue to rely on virtual teams for flexibility and access to global diverse talent. In spite of these advantages, there are new challenges introduced to these settings. It was found that cross-cultural challenges impacts communication, leadership and decision-making. This dissertation explores how differences in communication styles, leadership expectations, and work culture affect trust and decision-making within the virtual project management. In addition, it will examine how cultural intelligence and adaptive leadership strategies can help mitigate into these challenges. A mixed methods approach which consists of combining qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys will be done with project managers from technology, construction, and finance sectors, to provide empirical insights. Further exploration will be conducted on the findings which indicate that structured communication protocols can help reduce misunderstandings in diverse IT teams, while culturally adaptive leadership can help improve trust and improves decision-making in high-stakes industries like finance and healthcare. However, even though digital tools can enhance collaboration, the solution itself cannot fully replace the need for cultural awareness and interpersonal connection. This study extends out to existing research by integrating CQ with trust-building strategies and leadership adaptability. This will develop a practical framework for managing cross-cultural challenges in VPM. By addressing these factors, organizations can create a sustainable and high-performing virtual teams to manage projects in global virtual team with multi-cultural work environment.
