Abstract: The Singaporean identity is frequently defined by its multiculturalism, meritocracy, and strong economic position in the global scene. Emerging from a humble fishing village, Singapore has fostered strong national values of collective determination for progress and survivability among the population. However, as international opportunities rise and migration precedes, more citizens are challenged with preserving a sense of national identity while adapting to global norms. However, there have been concerns about the loss of national identity when Singaporeans choose to migrate overseas. This paper explores how social networks in Singaporean migrants have impacted the way these individuals renegotiate their personal identity and belonging to the country upon returning. Using qualitative methods of in-depth interviews, the findings reveal the importance of social networks in developing a new transnational identity developed during their time abroad. An overall positive relationship can be drawn between national identity and the presence of social networks.
