Abstract: This project aims to modernise the attendance tracking process at Nanyang Technological University’s College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS) by transitioning from the current manual, paper-based methods to a robust digital platform. The system was initially digitized through a previous iteration using NFC technology to streamline the student check-in process. However, as a proof-of-concept, the initial iteration was not built with scalability in mind, resulting in issues with scalability, maintainability, and performance under real-world conditions. To address these challenges, this iteration adopts a modular architecture with clearly decoupled backend and frontend components. The backend employs technologies designed for scalability and performance, while the frontend prioritizes maintainability and a superior user experience. The system also incorporates robust security practices such as secure authentication, comprehensive audit logging, and systematic database backups. This report elaborates on the various improvements implemented in the redesigned Attendance Management (AM) system, highlighting how each component collaboratively enhances the system’s security, scalability, and operational efficiency.
