Abstract: The virtual path (VP) concept is expected to play an important role in the operation of large scale Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. In the VP concept, VPs are used to provide logical direct connections between any two switching nodes through intermediate cross-connect nodes in the network. The logical direct connections are overlaid on the physical network to provide flexibility to the network management in rearranging the logical structure according to traffic demands.
