Abstract: Packet communication networks that can provide services to handle speech, video and data are envisaged to be the main building block in the future high speed burst data transport networks. However, speech quality in a packetized speech system can degrade substantially when the transmitted packets are lost in the transportation process. The loss of packets may be attributed to buffer overflows at various nodes in the network. Packets that have not been received within the delay time of the buffer memory or discarded by congestion control are considered lost.
