Issue Date: 1998
Abstract: This study investigated the impact of formal instruction on information searching effectiveness and behaviour of secondary school children using a full-text CD-ROM encyclopaedia entitled The 1996 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopaedia. Seventy-eight 13-year-old school children searching information were studied under two conditions. One group was given formal training and the other group was not given formal training. Two information-seeking strategies were taught to the subjects in the treatment group. They were a browse or title search strategy and a more complex, analytical strategy using Boolean query formulation.
