This research paper looks at the changes that have taken place in the Straits Times Editorial Library, specifically in the area of photo indexing. Photographs are very important source of information in the newspaper industry. Pictures are used to illustrate texts, or on their own, they speak volumes. This research paper examines the impact of technology on the library, how photographs were indexed before automation, and how this has changed now pictures are saved in the electronic format. Automation has brought about greater efficiency in terms of retrieval, as well as a more efficient work processes for all levels, including the editorial department, production department as well as for the library. Change is inevitable; the role of the library in this electronic age, however, is still to provide value-added services to its users, and to ensure that the preservation of digital materials will be ensured, just as it did for the traditional physical materials. The library has to ensure that information remains accessible and usable, that it will remain accessible for present and future generations.en_US
