Most academics have adopted a political approach on the study of “motherland” cognitive and neglected the impact of the motherland identity. In my research, I have discovered that “a myth of return” is a prominent theme in the representation of “motherland” in literature. This idea was also reflected in William Safran’s definition of ethnic diaspora, in which he argues that motherland is the ultimate place of belonging for most ethnic groups. Another common theme in the representation of “motherland” is “exile”. This supported James Clifford’s definition of ethnic diaspora, in which he claimed that motherland may not be the ultimate place of belonging for some ethnic groups. The subjects of study for this paper are the literary works of Taiwan’s second-generation mainlander writers and Taiwanese American writers.
