Opium played an important part in the Singapore society during the 18th Century. Not only was it crucial to the country’s economy, it was used widely among the Chinese daily. With the widespread of Chinese indulging in opium smoking, it meant that the problems which arose with opium also increased. The Singapore Chinese intellectuals who were at that time greatly influenced by the political happenings and cultural movements in the East and the West realized that opium had detrimental effects on the society. This study hopes to investigate the development of Anti-Opium deliberations among the Singapore Chinese Intellectual through their works from 1894 to 1911. Building on the examination of Anti-Opium sentiments from their formation to implementation, this thesis also aims to explore the influence and impact of the Anti-Opium campaign.en_US
