The key of this unique narration is narrative rhythm. Through the study of “Sanyan”, this paper mainly discusses the narrative rhythm’s regular rule and variation and its aesthetic qualities by analyzing the narrative structure, narrative time and rhetorical function of Sanyan. The analysis aimed at the aesthetic value and social function of the narrative rhythm which lead this popular novel in Ming dynasty to achieve its peculiarity. The first chapter focuses on the research methods of Sanyan and identifies the significance of this paper. This chapter is a brief introducing of this paper's main points. The second chapter is applied to analyze the characteristic of Sanyan’s narrative rhythm with some examples from stories of Sanyan. This chapter probes into the rhythm’s expression to excavate its rhythm value in the form of both sequence and variation. The third chapter focuses on the function of narrative rhythm on entertainment and moral teaching of Sanyan in order to expound the significance of narrative rhythm. Through this chapter, we can know how it influences and reforms a reader.
