Soon Ailing is one of the most outstanding female writers in Singapore, with numerous award winning works. Chinese traditional culture is an important element in her stories, such as the tea culture in bi luo shi li xiang, the embroidery culture in bai xiang zu yu kong que tu, and the jade and flower culture in yu hun kou .In addition, feminism also plays a significant part in her literary works. During the early stages of Singapore’s development as a nation, females were given the equal rights to work and study as Singapore was in need of manpower. However, Singapore was still a patriarchal society and even with education, females then did not have the time to adjust their traditional mindsets to match the rapid social development, thus resulting in the overlapping of traditional feminism and modern feminism in Singapore women. Soon Ailing, being a Singaporean woman during these trying times, shared the same history.
