Abstract: In this paper, we test empirically the effects of FDI on research and development output proxied by patents, and their interaction effects on economic growth using yearly data for 21 of the coastal and central provinces of China from 1995 to 2005. Our results suggest that FDI is an important determinant for transfer of technology via patents, which contributes to higher economic growth in China.
