Home schooling in Singapore : motivations, capital and gender.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to account for why parents wish to home school their children despite having such an internationally recognised education system in Singapore, and to provide a better understanding of the realities of doing so. Interviews were conducted with ten parents, who had been obtained through personal contacts and snowball sampling. Findings show that the respondents are more likely to home school their children for pedagogical motivations rather than ideological motivations, the cultural and social capital that these parents possess are determining factors for home schooling, and gender regime affects how home schools are run.
