Abstract: The Intelligent Turret Assembly System (ITAS) is a modular, re-configurable assembly system with a small footprint. This thesis investigates the use of Simulated Annealing (SA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Tabu Search (TS) and Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) for finding optimal configuration for the ITAS. A hybrid GA-ACO algorithm which was found to out-perform other conventional methods was proposed.
