Abstract: Use of coaxial cable is limited by its characteristics such as attenuation, bandwidth and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference. With the increased speed of transmission (data rate), there is a need for a suitable transmission medium. As such, an optical fiber-based interface has been designed and fabricated for IBM PC/AT orcompatible computers. A basic networking software has been developed. An experimental fibre optic local area network has been implemented.
