Abstract: This thesis sums up a detailed study of QoS issues and analysis of existing QoS schemes for the IEEE 802.11 WLAN [1], the operation of the legacy IEEE 802.11 MAC functions, including DCF, PCF and their limitation of supporting QoS, following with the IEEE 802.1 le [2], HCF which is the enhancement to the original MAC, consisting of EDCA and HCCA functions, the new features on QoS support are introduced. Afterward, various QoS mechanisms for WLAN, based on the distributed approaches of DCF, centralized approaches of PCF and hybrid approaches of 802.1 le are summarized and evaluated by a survey of various research papers and analysis of their research direction and contribution.
