Chinese mini-fiction in Singapore emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s and prospered as a new literary genre in the Chinese literary field of Singapore. The fast-paced society of Singapore and the bilingual policy that the Singapore Government implemented at that time were some of the determining factors which resulted in Singapore becoming a language environment that was suitable for the growth and evolvement of this genre. This thesis aims to track the historical development of Chinese mini-fiction in Singapore and analyse mini-fiction literary works using the New Criticism theory. It will begin with a brief introduction of Singapore Chinese Literature and the evolvement of the types of creative writings throughout the years. Many novels and publications flourished during the 1980s and 1990s. Among them, one publication to note was Mini-fiction Quarterly published by the Singapore Association of Writers from 1992 to 1997 which contained only pure mini-fiction literary works.en_US
