The frequent use of adjectives shows that adjectives have an important application value for students. However, local students only know about the adjective’s lexical meaning. They are not familiar with the adjectives’ grammatical functions. In order to illustrate the phenomenon mentioned above, we conducted a survey of secondary one and secondary two students’ applications of adjectives in their essays. Their uses and understandings of the different functions and features of adjectives were examined. It is found out that the students need to make good use of their relevant knowledge in order to understand clearly that adjectives have several functions and features. At the primary stage, they have already learned the basic meanings of the adjectives tested. Secondary students should learn some basic grammatical know ledges that are related to adjective usages so that they can enhance their understanding of the use of adjectives. Through exploring how these students understand the different usages of adjectives, we try to examine whether they have mastered sufficient knowledge of the basic Chinese grammar. Our study result shows that most of the students could hardly differentiate between adjectives, nouns, verbs and adverbs due to the lack of relevant knowledge and understanding of grammar.||URI:||http://hdl.handle.net/10356/35253||Rights:||Nanyang Technological University||Fulltext Permission:||restricted||Fulltext Availability:||With Fulltext|
