Abstract: There are two main offerings of Intrusion Detection System (IDS): commercial and public domain (Freeware and Open Source). Both have their advantages and disadvantages. This project studies and investigates the popular IDS with emphasis on public domain offerings; proposes a defense-in-depth Freeware Intrusion Detection System based on some of the public domain tools; implements and verifies the systems with hacking tools available from the Internet.
