Abstract: Heart rate variability (HRV), quantifies the beat to beat variation in heart rhythm, presenting itself as an important clinical and diagnostic tool. This thesis provides the foundation for a study investigating the use of HRV parameters as predictors of patient outcome (death, hospital admission, ICU admission and length of stay) based on their pre-hospital electrocardiogram (ECG) record.
