Abstract: Plasma spraying is widely used to produce coatings on complex engineering components because of its high deposition rate and wide range of materials that can be sprayed. Also, there are little limitations on the size of the parts and reasonably environmentally friendly as compared to the wet coating processes (e.g. electroplating). However, the three-dimensional shape of the components leads to the deficiency of the plasma spraying process since this process is prone to coating profiles' variations when spraying various surface topologies. Hitherto, the desired coating profiles are successfully optimized by costly and extensive trial and error testing, involving highly-trained manpower and part costs. A deposition model to predict the profiles for such parts is therefore desirable because in using this model, the cost and effort of the test spraying actual part will be reduced, if not eliminated, significantly shortening the process chain.
