Abstract: Exploration is the heart of the matter. This project began with an intention of working with the hands. Thus the exploration of craft. This then led to an opportunity to learn to weave using rattan. From there, there was the search for a specific product to design and for what purpose. Through that search came the discovery of an intrinsic interest in patterns and modularity. With rattan as the main medium of exploration, it was decided that the project be mainly about the exploration of modularity. This led to ideas of creating a screen or partition that can incorporate light. Thus the whole journey can be summarised as an exploration and integration of the following: Traditional craft (of rattan weaving) Modularity / Modules to form a whole (screen) Integration of weaving & modules with simple DIY technology For the mass market eg. IKEA.
